Good Afternoon, Washington DC

On Tuesday, Anna visited both the Washington Monument and the White House as part of an afternoon with Mom in DC followed by a picnic dinner with Dad and Corinne. I tried to capture a photo of Anna pointing to the Washington Monument to illustrate the story in the last post, but this is the best I could do:

On the other hand, I happen to be taking a video of her near the White House, when she put on this performance:

I would like to say that she was doing something really brilliant like giving Obama advice, or even just recognizing the White House. But in reality, I think she was pointing to her new obsession, which happened to be located in front of the White House - a fountain. But I could be wrong? Anna, you will have to let me know someday what you were trying to say.

And finally, playing peek-a-boo:

new, new, new

Life is certainly different now that Anna is walking all over instead of crawling all over. She moves so much faster and I'm definitely in the middle of a learning curve trying to relearn how to a bunch of things given our new situation. In addition to walking, Anna has been doing a bunch of other new things:

1. Yesterday on a walk, she pointed to a dog and said, "da!"

2. She likes to eat with a fork and a spoon. She's been trying to do this for a while now, without too much success. In the past few weeks she really likes to have a fork or a spoon in her hand while she eats, even it is just to hold while she feeds herself with the other hand. But in the past few days, she has gotten much better getting food into her mouth. Last night she was stabbing meatball pieces with her fork and putting them in her mouth. Yesterday at breakfast Matt said she ate a whole bowl of chex with her spoon - carefully spooning one chex at a time!

3. Stairs, stairs, and more stairs. Everywhere we go Anna is on the lookout for stairs. I guess this was always true to some extent, but now she likes to walk up them while holding my hand.

4. Riding toys! For a long time now Anna has really liked any kind of riding toy, but it is only in the past few days that she has decided her stroller is a toy. If we take the stroller to the park, she sometimes prefers to push the stroller around the park instead of playing with the playground toys.

5. Anna has taken a new interest in books. About a month ago she really only liked to flip through her books quickly and look at the pictures. Now she seems to have a greater interest in, I guess I should say, "plot"? She brings the books to us to have them read, likes to choose her books herself before bed, and points out objects so we tell her what they are. Two cute things in particular: when we get to the "M" page in Dr. Seuss's ABC's she smacks her lips together over and over to saying "ma, ma, ma". Also, she seems to have made the connection between the picture of the Washington Monument in her "Goodnight Washington DC" book and the real Washington Monument. When she sees the WM in person, she gets all excited and points to it. When she sees the WM in the book, she also gets excited and points up to the sky, I think to show how big it is.

6. Anna still loves going outside. She asks to go outside all the time by pointing to the door. She gets really excited when I put her shoes on because to her, that means she is going outside. It is very disappointing when she has to put her shoes on to go to the grocery store.

7. Yesterday at the indoor playground at the mall, she climbed up the stairs of the slide by herself, sat down, went down the slide, and walked back to the steps by herself.

8. This one is for all the uncles: She walks around the family room kicking a ball!

Happy Father's Day!!

We had a fun Father's Day weekend including a trip to a special waterslide park made for little kids. Anna had a great time going down mini-water slides, playing with fountains, riding on floating animals, and of course, walking around ramps, sidewalks, and bridges.

Anna loves walking all over now! Just going outside and taking a walk has become one of her new favorite activities:

Happy Father's Day, Daddy, I just adore you :)

A visit to our nations Capitol, literally!

Right now mom's best friend from college, Wesley is visiting from Texas! Simultaneously Dad is working on a special project for the appropriations committee this month, so his office is in the Capitol building. Consequently, we all got a private tour of the Capitol on Sunday.

In the chairman's office

The powerful appropriations committee gets the good real estate

88 degrees & humid: the Texan is comfortable in jeans :)

I don't care where we are, I want another Cheerio!

Is this Athens, Mom?
I have to admit, this beats my nation's Capitol in Austin

Afterward we headed over to the botanical gardens. Anna was especially fond of the "children's garden," where she found...another fountain!

A visit from Grandpa and Great-Grandma Jane!

On Tuesday Grandpa and Great-Grandma Jane drove down to Virginia to visit us. We had an action packed couple of days including learning to walk! On Tuesday afternoon we took them to Neilson's Frozen Custard, where Anna couldn't decide if she preferred Grandpa's peach custard or Great-Grandma's vanilla custard so she just ate a ton of both. Then we went to Meadow Lane park where Anna checked out about every riding toy there and Granpa, well, he got a work out. Yesterday Anna brought everyone to her music class with her. Grandpa thought he might sit on the side and watch the class, but Anna had a different plan for him- continually walking over and bringing him back into the music circle with her. Last night Mom and Great-Grandma took a ride around DC to see the sights all lit up, which was a lot of fun.

Before I post the pictures, here is a video of two people showing off their new skills...

Anna is walking and Great-Grandma Jane is a cinematographer!

Roof-top pools, frozen yogurt, and chillin' in Dupont Circle

On Sunday afternoon we met up with Corinne in DC for a swim in her rooftop pool and a walk to a frozen yogurt shop and Dupont Circle. Anna loved all of it! It took her a little time to warm up to the pool, but once she did, she didn't want to get out. She was also quite excited about the frozen yogurt and the fountain at Dupont Circle. A few great pics from the frozen yogurt shop (taken by Corinne) and a picture from the fountain:

so tell me again what my mom was like when she was little...
